The nine spiders of the Treasure Valley
Idaho hosts hundreds of spider species, but walk into any Boise, Meridian, or Nampa home and the spider you find will almost certainly be one of these nine.
Hobo spider
The valley's most famous spider. A medium brown funnel weaver, fast on its feet, living low in rock beds, window wells, and foundation gaps. Males wander indoors August through October. Blamed for decades for rotting bites; modern research has largely acquitted it. Common everywhere in the Treasure Valley. Full hobo spider guide.
Giant house spider
A larger relative of the hobo with the same funnel-weaving habits and the same fall wandering season, capable of genuinely startling size. Not medically significant. Ironically good news: it competes with and preys on hobo spiders wherever it establishes.
Western black widow
Glossy black, red hourglass underneath, unmistakable in a flashlight beam. Builds strong, messy webs in undisturbed spots: garages, water meter boxes, woodpiles, sheds, window wells, under patio furniture. Shy and non-aggressive, but the one Idaho spider whose bite is a medical event. Respect, don't panic. Full black widow guide.
Yellow sac spider
Small, pale yellow to cream, hunts at night on walls and ceilings, rests by day in a silk sac tucked into corners and behind frames. Likely responsible for more genuine indoor bites than every other Idaho spider combined, usually when trapped against skin. Painful welt, heals on its own. Full yellow sac spider guide.
Wolf spider
Big, hairy, fast, and web-free: a ground hunter that chases prey down. Wanders in under garage doors in fall and triggers more panic per capita than any spider in the valley. Mothers carry their young on their backs, which is either wonderful or horrifying depending on the customer. Full wolf spider guide.
Cellar spider
The spindly "daddy long legs" of basements and crawl spaces, hanging upside down in loose, messy webs that collect dust into classic cobwebs. Breeds steadily indoors year-round. Completely harmless, just untidy.
False widow
A brown widow-shaped spider that shows up in garages and window wells and gets mistaken for the real thing weekly. No hourglass, no glossy jet black, no medical significance. If you're unsure, photograph it and send it to us rather than getting close enough to check.
Orb weavers
The architects behind September's big wheel-shaped webs on porches, fences, and shrubs. Chunky, colorful, and impressive by fall. Harmless to people and genuinely useful: an active orb web is a wasp and fly trap you didn't have to buy.
Jumping spider
Small, fuzzy, big-eyed, and moves in curious hops. Hunts by day on fences, siding, and windowsills, and will turn to look at you, which is more than most pests offer. Harmless. If any spider wins customers over, it's this one.
One more for completeness: the long-legged creature in your window well with a single pill-shaped body and no waist is a harvestman, not a spider at all. It has no venom glands, and the playground legend that it's "the most venomous spider but can't bite you" is wrong twice in one sentence.
How to tell the look-alikes apart
Precise spider ID often takes a microscope, which is nobody's weekend plan. But the practical field marks get you close enough to act:
- Web shape beats body markings. A funnel disappearing into rock or a wall gap means hobo or giant house spider. A strong, chaotic, three-dimensional tangle in a protected corner means a widow or false widow. A flat wheel means an orb weaver. No web at all and it runs: wolf or jumping spider.
- Location is evidence. On the ceiling at night: yellow sac. In the basement hanging upside down: cellar spider. In the woodpile or meter box: think widow until proven otherwise, and use a flashlight, not fingers.
- The widow check is the only one that matters medically. Glossy black, spherical abdomen, red hourglass underneath. Everything else in the valley is a nuisance, not a threat.
- Hobo versus giant house spider is a trick question. Even experts often need magnification, and the answer doesn't change anything: same habits, same season, same treatment, same non-dangerous verdict.
The hardest case in the valley is the brown funnel weaver trio, so here it is in one table:

Spider bites: the honest medical section
Here's what the research actually supports, which is calmer than the internet on every point.
Genuine spider bites are rare. Spiders don't feed on humans, don't seek us out, and bite defensively, almost always because they got pressed against skin: a sac spider trapped in a sleeve, a widow disturbed while a hand reached into a woodpile. Studies that follow up "spider bite" reports consistently find most were something else: other insects, skin infections, or irritation.
The widow is the real one. A western black widow bite can cause intense muscle pain, cramping, and sweating that spreads beyond the bite site. Fatalities are extremely rare in the modern era, but see a doctor promptly, and try to bring or photograph the spider.
The hobo verdict has changed. For years hobo bites were blamed for necrotic wounds, and the spider even carried the nickname "aggressive house spider." The evidence didn't hold up: the aggression claim was a misreading of its name, and the tissue-damage claim failed under scrutiny, with the CDC dropping the hobo from its dangerous-spider materials. Idaho grew up afraid of the wrong spider.
When to get medical attention: spreading pain or cramping, bite marks with worsening redness or ulceration, fever, or any bite where a widow is plausible. When in doubt, a doctor beats a forum thread.
The brown recluse question, settled
Idaho has no established brown recluse population. None. This isn't our opinion, it's the consistent finding of university entomologists who examine specimens submitted from around the state, year after year. The recluse's native range ends far southeast of here. A truly rare hitchhiker in a moving box is possible; a breeding population in your Meridian crawl space is not.
Nearly every "brown recluse" we're shown in the Treasure Valley turns out to be a hobo, a wolf spider, or a yellow sac spider. This matters for your wallet and your health both: paying to treat a spider that isn't there wastes money, and a wound assumed to be a recluse bite here is usually an infection that needed a doctor, not a spider that needed blame.
Where spiders live in your house, room by room
- Garage: the spider capital of every Idaho home. Widows behind stored boxes and in corner clutter, wolf spiders and fall wanderers under the door gap, sac spiders in the ceiling corners. If we could only treat one room, it's this one.
- Window wells: a pit trap that catches wandering insects, which makes it prime funnel-weaver and widow real estate. Egg sac central.
- Basement and crawl space: cellar spiders year-round, plus whatever the crawl space vents let in. Humidity and undisturbed storage keep the population fed and hidden.
- Bathrooms: spiders end up trapped in tubs and sinks not because they came up the drain (they didn't; they fell in chasing moisture and can't climb the slick sides).
- Bedrooms and living areas: mostly transit zones for wanderers and hunting grounds for the occasional sac spider. Persistent sightings here mean the population elsewhere in the house is big enough to spill over.
- Eaves, soffits, and exterior lighting: the web belt. Every fixture that burns bright white all night is a bug buffet with a resident spider staff.
The Idaho spider year, season by season
Spiders here run a strict annual program. Egg sacs laid in fall overwinter in silk armor. Spring hatches them into spiderlings nobody notices. Summer is the growth season, spent eating the insect boom that Treasure Valley irrigation guarantees. By late August the year's spiders are full-sized adults, the males start their mating wanderings, and September becomes the month every Idahoan associates with spiders in the house. October is for egg-laying, and by Thanksgiving the outdoor cast has mostly died off, leaving the indoor specialists to hold the fort until spring.

Spider geography: how the nine cities differ
The whole valley shares one spider calendar, but not one spider load. Two facts set your local pressure: how close you are to water and fields, and how old your neighborhood is. The short version of why the valley breeds spiders at all: high desert irrigation concentrates insects into every watered yard, and the insects feed the spiders. - Meridian: the valley's spider capital by our reckoning. Mile after mile of new subdivisions on former farmland, with canals threading between them and establishment watering everywhere.
- Boise: heavy pressure with a twist: the North End and Bench add old-foundation gaps and mature landscaping, and the foothills edge adds wolf spider traffic.
- Eagle: big irrigated lots, water features, and river frontage. More landscaping per home means more web real estate per home.
- Star and Middleton: river towns with fields at their backs. Fall wandering season starts noticeably early when harvested fields push prey insects toward houses.
- Nampa and Caldwell: canal-fed and farm-edged, with old tree canopies. Steady pressure, plus the valley's thickest widow habitat in older outbuildings.
- Kuna: new slabs on open desert. Displaced field spiders plus flood irrigation equals surprisingly busy first-year homes.
- Garden City: the greenbelt corridor keeps insect prey high all season, and older commercial buildings shelter indoor breeders.

Prevention that works, and the myths that don't
What actually moves the needle:
- De-webbing and egg sac removal. The least glamorous and most effective habit in spider control. Every sac removed is a generation that never hatches.
- Sealing: garage door bottom seals, door sweeps, screens, and the gap where siding meets foundation. Spiders don't chew entrances; they use the ones we leave.
- Lighting: warm yellow exterior bulbs pull in fewer flying insects, which shrinks the food supply that anchors web-builders to your doorways.
- Decluttering the right zones: garage corners, under-deck storage, and woodpiles against the house. Widows are clutter spiders; take away the clutter and they relocate.
- Prey reduction: fewer crickets and earwigs at the foundation means fewer reasons for spiders to hunt there. This is half of what a professional barrier really does.
What doesn't hold up: peppermint and essential oils (weak, short-lived evidence at best), ultrasonic repellers (no credible support), horse chestnuts on windowsills (folklore), and the ceiling-level bug bombs people set off in despair (they don't reach the protected spots where spiders and sacs actually are, and they're the wrong tool for the job). None of these remove webs, sacs, prey, or entry points, and those four things are the whole game. The homeowner's season by season playbook
If you want to run spider defense yourself, this is the year's work in four moves, each timed to the spider calendar above.
- April: the sweep. Walk the house with a web brush or broom. Clear every web and egg sac from eaves, window wells, shutters, and the garage ceiling. Each sac you remove now is dozens of spiders that never join the September class.
- June: cut the food supply. Swap bright white exterior bulbs for warm yellow, fix the sprinkler head soaking the foundation, and pull mulch back from the slab. Fewer insects at the wall means fewer spiders anchored to it. More in what attracts spiders in your house.
- August: seal before the surge. Garage door bottom seal, door sweeps, screen repairs, and the gap where siding meets foundation. This is the single highest-value weekend of the spider year, and how spiders get into your house shows exactly where to look.

When it's time to treat, and what treatment involves
Our honest threshold: if you're seeing spiders in living spaces weekly, finding fresh webs within days of knocking them down, or you've found even one black widow where kids or pets play, the population has outgrown DIY.
Professional spider work is different from what's in the hardware store aisle, and the difference isn't enthusiasm. It's method. Here is what a spider visit from us actually looks like, step by step:
- Inspection with a flashlight, not a clipboard. We check the widow zones (meter box, garage corners, woodpile, under the deck), the window wells, and the eave line, and we tell you what we found in plain English.
- Physical web and egg sac removal. Every reachable web and sac comes down. This is manual, unglamorous, and the most important step of the visit: sprays don't un-lay an egg sac.
- Targeted treatment where spiders actually live. A microencapsulated product goes into cracks, gaps, weep holes, and web anchor points. Spiders ride on leg contact with treated surfaces, so placement beats volume every time.
- Perimeter barrier for the prey. The foundation band treatment is really insect control: cut the crickets and earwigs at the wall and the spiders lose their grocery store.

Quick facts homeowners always ask about
- How long do they live? Most valley spiders live one year: hatch in spring, die by winter. The exceptions are indoor specialists and female widows, which can live two to three years in an undisturbed garage corner.
- How many spiders per egg sac? Commonly 50 to over 100, depending on species. This is why sac removal beats squishing individual spiders by two orders of magnitude.
- Do they come up the drains? No. Spiders in tubs and sinks fell in from above chasing moisture and can't climb the slick sides. The drain was never the entrance.
- What are the floating silk strands in fall? Ballooning. Fresh spiderlings release silk threads and ride the wind to new territory. Those shining strands across the yard on an October morning are the next generation commuting.
- Do spiders freeze in winter? The outdoor cast mostly dies, but egg sacs ride out any Idaho winter in silk insulation, and species that shelter in wall voids produce a natural antifreeze that lets them wait out the cold.
- Does one spider mean more? One wanderer in September means it's September. Fresh webs reappearing within days, or sightings in living areas every week, mean a breeding population close by.

What is the most dangerous spider in Idaho?
The western black widow, and it is the only Idaho spider current research treats as medically significant. Widow bites are rare because the spider is shy and stays in undisturbed spots, but a bite can cause serious muscle pain and cramping and deserves medical attention. Every other common Idaho spider is a minor medical event at worst.
How do I tell a hobo spider from a giant house spider?
Honestly, you mostly can't by eye, and even experts often need magnification. Both are brown funnel weavers with similar markings, and the giant house spider is simply larger with longer legs. The practical answer: it doesn't change what you do, because neither is considered medically significant and both respond to the same treatment and exclusion.
Should I kill the spiders in my house?
A few spiders in a garage or basement are quietly eating other pests, and squishing every one you see doesn't change the population. What changes the population is removing webs and egg sacs, reducing the insects they eat, and sealing entry gaps. If spiders are showing up in living spaces weekly, that's a population problem worth treating, not a squishing problem.
Do spiders bite people in bed at night?
Far less than people believe. Spiders don't feed on people and have no reason to seek you out. Most bites blamed on overnight spiders turn out to be other insects, skin conditions, or infections. Genuine spider bites usually happen when a spider gets pressed against skin, like a yellow sac spider trapped in bedding or clothes, which is why shaking out stored items matters more than fearing your mattress.
Do peppermint oil or ultrasonic repellers keep spiders away?
The evidence is weak for peppermint and essentially absent for ultrasonic devices. Strong scents may make a spider briefly detour, but they don't remove webs, egg sacs, prey, or entry points, which are the four things that actually decide your spider population. Spend the effort on sealing, lighting, and de-webbing instead.

Indoors, spider season runs August through October, peaking in September when mature males wander in search of mates. Why does my brand new house have spiders?
New construction sits on ground that supported field spiders long before the slab was poured, and building disturbs their habitat without removing them. New homes also come with fresh unsettled gaps, unscreened vents, and landscaping that gets heavy establishment watering, which grows the insects spiders eat. New subdivisions in the Treasure Valley routinely see more spider pressure than older streets for the first few years.
Are the spiders in my house coming in from outside?
Two different populations share your address. Cellar spiders, yellow sac spiders, and false widows mostly live and breed indoors year round. The fall wave is different: those are outdoor funnel weavers and wolf spiders, almost all wandering males, coming in under doors and through foundation gaps.
